CW's Dawn Ostroff credits fan letters & emails with influencing decision to air Moonlight

TV Guide interviewed Dawn Ostroff (entertainment chief of the CW Network) regarding the channel's plan to air Moonlight after The Vampire Diaries. She specifically says all the email messages and letters loyal fans of the show continue to send influenced their decision! *cheer* Keep up the good work! Who knows what else Moonlight fans will accomplish. =)

The CW Sinks Its Teeth Into Moonlight

Alex O'Loughlin fans got a bloody good summer treat when the CW acquired all 16 episodes of Moonlight, the Aussie actor's short-lived but beloved vampire detective show. "We get letters and e-mails about Moonlight all the time," says CW entertainment chief Dawn Ostroff. "And so we thought it would be interesting if we aired it following The Vampire Diaries."

Moonlight (Thursdays at 9/8c, The CW) follows the perpetually 30-year-old private investigator Mick St. John (O'Loughlin), his hedonistic buddy Josef (Jason Dohring) and Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), a young reporter whose chemistry with Mick threatens her relationship with her human fiancé. Around to cause trouble: the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), who turned Mick on their wedding night six decades earlier.

On tonight's episode, as Mick and Beth track down a dangerous newly formed blood sucker, the potential couple have the conversation. Mick offers the snoopy journalist a primer on all things vampire. But will he reveal his own creepily romantic turning story? And will Beth bolt?

"I love the aggressive, animalistic side of the show," says O'Loughlin, who will star in CBS' buzzworthy remake of Hawaii Five-O in the fall. "I love the genre, the action and the masculinity of the character." The many passionate female fans were "awesome," he says, "but I want my pals to think it's cool." Cool, yeah, and very, very hot.

You are doing a fantastic job of contacting not only the networks, but also flooding DirecTv with mail asking them to step up to financially sponsor a second season of Moonlight :) Now, Leeser ( from Moonlightline ) has posted a poll at their request. She has said that they will be monitoring the numbers. Apparently, they want to get an idea of fan willingness to subscribe to their service ~ if they arrange a deal with Moonlight similar to what they did for Friday Night Lights.

Moonlight Fans Look to Sci Fi

Die-hard fans of CBS's canceled vampire detective drama, Moonlight, are turning their attention to the Sci Fi Channel, which may be considering the possibility of thinking about maybe picking up the show. Or not.

Pondering the future of canceled but popular shows is like reading invisible tea leaves, because discussions are always tentative and firm commitments rarely materialize. What we do know is that Harry Werksman, who is one of the show's writers and executive producers (and a veteran of Farscape and Earth: Final Conflict, among others), told Moonlight fans recently that "talks" are under way for season 2, and that if the show were picked up by Sci Fi its hero, Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin), would likely be transplanted to New York City, where Sci Fi is headquartered. (Mick has talked about vampires having to move on because of their longevity, though he seems to really like L.A.)

Again, nothing is even close to agreed yet. Fans are reaching out to other networks as well, though TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has proclaimed that Moonlight on The CW "ain't happening" (true that: they've got more fantasy shows than they want already). A push to get DirecTV to sponsor Moonlight, which has a precedent with Friday Night Lights, is also under way.

Werksman also stated the obvious, which is that there can be no Moonlight without O'Loughlin. Hidden in that statement is a reminder that rest of the cast – which was replaced once already en bloc at the pilot stage – is probably expendable. Would Moonlight fans be willing to sacrifice the brassy Beth (Sophia Myles) to keep their Mick fix? Smart money says yes. But the chemistry was developing nicely between Beth and Mick in the bottom half of season 1, so producers will most likely try to keep that dynamic if Myles stays available. Beth needs to move on from Buzzwire anyway, so a move to New York will be good for her character as well.

Werksman also said that the season 1 DVD, including some commentary tracks from O'Loughlin, is scheduled for September. Meanwhile, if a TV deal falls through they'll start thinking about shopping a Moonlight movie, with the high level of fan support a strong selling point.

Fans looking to convince Sci Fi to pick up Moonlight have a number of options, including sending a "perpetually cool" postcard (pdf) to the network's headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York 10112. You can email them too and let them know you'll follow the show to Sci Fi.

Harry Werksman discusses Moonlight's future and fans

Moonlight writer & executive producer, Harry Werksman, was a special guest at the convention in LA. He spoke of his gratitude for the amazing fans of the show :) The dvd we all can't wait to get should be out in September. When asked about the future of our show, Harry said that talks continue in an effort to bring it back for season 2. If all else fails, he plans on pitching the idea of doing a movie & hopes the studio might be interested. However, they are concentrating on trying to get the show back on tv right now.

He feels the same way we do ~ there is no Moonlight without Alex O'Loughlin! Also, Harry confirmed that Alex really was nude in his freezer in the B.C. episode (#1x06). Ooooooooooooo my!

Harry brought the 3 minute Moonlight trailer they are using to shop around our show. Everyone says it was wonderful and they can't imagine any network that sees it turning us down.

Also, Harry said that IF the Sci-Fi channel does become Moonlight's new home, our Vampires will move to New York City. This does not mean that Sci-Fi or any other network has picked up our show yet. Moonlight fans must keep contacting the tv networks urging them to see what a treasure they could have in our show.

Since Harry singled them out, we definitely need to continue writing, emailing & calling Sci-fi!

Using USA's slogan "Characters Welcome" in our letters to the network

Sherrilina has a great idea for use in the messages we send to the USA network urging them to pick up Moonlight....

Idea for Writing to USA: "Six Characters in Search of a Network"

USA's slogan is "Characters Welcome"--so I thought that in writing to them we should definitely emphasize that slant and talk about all the wonderful and unique characters on Moonlight that are the kind of characters USA claims they are seeking. In particular, though, I thought a play on Pirandello's play title, "Six Characters in Search of an Author" might be cute and catchy and get USA's attention, as well as get our point across....So I just wanted to put that idea out there for people's postcards and letters and emails to USA, if you want to use this slogan for subject lines, etc.

Warner Bros continues to shop Moonlight to other networks

As the Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, Warner Bros continues to shop Moonlight to other networks. I know that you understand how important it is for fans to keep writing, calling and emailing. You have been doing a marvelous job :) If each of us used the few minutes it takes to write a message on a postcard every day, imagine the avalanche of positive mail the networks will receive!

Yes, we want to email and call..... just remember, The Powers That Be are really impressed by snail mail. In their minds, it shows the most dedication and loyalty to a show. I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying being able to tell them how amazing Moonlight is & how much it means to me.

Reach out to people in real life! Most of Moonlight's fans are not part of the online community. We need for people offline to contact the networks too. For example, I have called & sent text messages to everyone I know asking for their help. Also, continuing to strike up conversations with people at coffeeshops (since I don't drink coffee, they are teashops to me ~ ha!), at restaurants, etc. Leaving informational flyers about joining the fight on college campuses, bulletin boards at the library & grocery stores, coffeeshops and so on.

Fans can make a difference! When Joss Whedon's Firefly was canceled by Fox, its fans stayed active for MONTHS afterward. That led to it being turned into a major motion picture ~ Serenity. Family Guy was brought back to network television after its cancelation due to the staggering number of DVDs purchased by fans. We are just as dedicated, if not more so, to Moonlight, aren't we?

I like to use the Perpetually Cool postcards, along with a stack of Oklahoma cards.... letting them know that Moonlight fans come from all over the United States & around the world.

Please, watch Moonlight's episodes on the official CBS website as often as possible. They track the number of times each video is played. I stream them while I'm working online, cleaning house, filling out my postcards and such. We need to watch them while we can, because CBS has taken down all but two of the episodes already! At this moment, only What's Left Behind (episode #1x15) and season finale, Sonata (episode #1x16) are available.

Sending snail mail to the networks about Moonlight

In many of the marvelous emails & comments I have received, you have asked if I plan on closing the Moonlightfan blog. No! I'll still be here passing on any news about our show, as well as our unforgettable cast :)

CBS expects the fans to campaign for a few days and then lose interest. They don't know us very well, do they?

You are doing an fantastic job of supporting Moonlight! Remember, to get everyone you know involved. Not all Moonlight fans actually participate in the online fandoms. We need to reach out to people offline too! Family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, your second cousin once removed ~ the more the merrier!

Use the "Save Our Vampire" button at the top left on the blog to get posts with ideas for helping the Moonlight cause.

Please, keep in mind that sending emails & making phone calls is helpful. However, writing postcards & letters makes a huge impact. As we have discussed previously, it only takes a few minutes plus stamps... but the networks think it takes more effort & dedication to the show.

The fight for Moonlight continues!

We are still fighting for Moonlight! After all, our cast, crew & writers deserve it. None of us would be satisfied if we didn't try everything in our power to save Moonlight.

Please, continue urging Warner Bros to shop our show around to other networks. We also want to write the networks.... CW, SciFi & USA in particular.... letting them know what a goldmine they could have if they pick up Moonlight. Tell them all that we will follow our show!

Moonlight United has asked us all to join in the Perpetually Cool Postcard Campaign. Here are the details ~

With today’s news that CBS has opted not to pick up Moonlight for next season, Moonlight fans have been asking what we can do next. The idea of a postcard campaign, in addition to calling and emailing, seems to be the most popular and viable option for requesting that another network pick up our show.

To make this as easy as possible for fans, and to provide a united front, we’ve created a simple .pdf file with two postcards that you can print on cardstock and mail in. We encourage fans to write their own “perpetually cool” message on the front, and write the address on the blank side.

Right now we are targeting Warner Bros. (the studio that produces the show) to ask them to find a new home for Moonlight, and the CW, which is rumored to be interested.

Time is of the essence so these cards need to get to Warner Bros. and the CW within the next 24-48 hours. Overnight delivery is your friend!
